As always, the Creede Arts Council (CAC) was excited and delighted to receive and open boxes containing the entries to the National Small Print Show (NSPS). Opening the boxes is just the beginning of a long process to get an amazing show of artwork up in time for the opening and sale, this year happening on May 25th at 5:30pm at the Creede Repertory Theatre. The prints and artists must be logged into an extensive database, labeled carefully, some prints may need fixing as far as the matting or the mounting is concerned, and the prints must be carefully judged for quality and content, as this is a juried exhibit.
The judge for the 2013 NSPS is Mark Lunning. The CAC is very grateful to Mr. Lunning for providing his expertise. He is a Master Printer and the owner of Open Press Ltd. in Denver, CO. He graduated from the University of Northern Colorado and has been teaching with the Art Students’ League of Denver, Denver, Colorado since 1995.
The CAC has new events planned for the 2013 NSPS. First, the NSPS begins with a fabulous opening night reception and sale, this year taking place on Saturday May 25th at 5:30pm in the Creede Repertory Theatre (CRT) lobby. Second, on that same evening, the CAC and CRT open the Past Judge Retrospective in the upstairs gallery of the CRT. This show features prints of all sizes, created by previous NSPS judges. Both shows run through June and into July and end with a third event: a wonderful new closing reception on Sunday, July 7th at 3:30pm. Lastly, a smaller show of select prints, known as the Travelling NSPS, goes to the Evergreen Center for the Arts in Evergreen, CO. The Travelling NSPS opens on Monday, July 15th and runs through Thursday, August 15th.
This year’s First Place entry is Randall LaGro’s “Her Grace”, Second Place is Leonard Leibowitz’s “You don’t have to sleep to dream…” and Third Place is Barry Klingman’s “Trailmarker: Garden/The Fall”. We know that Mr. Lunning lost sleep over his decisions of which prints to accept and which to award prizes to, since the quality of work received for the CAC NSPS is always among the very best, and this year was no exception!
So, be sure to attend as many events as you can, for they all are sure to please! At the opening night sale, it is up to chance as to whom gets to purchase each print since all names of folks who want to buy prints go into a hat to be drawn in a random order! Further, many of the prints are in limited editions or monotypes (meaning only one exists in the world), and the opening-night-sale process has evolved over the years to ensure that all is fair in art purchases at the National Small Print Show. The evening becomes an exciting race to the artwork of your dreams, as patrons wait for their name to be called so that they can be sure to secure their favorites. Every year the opening proves to be a fabulous evening with food, wine, and wonderful ‘little packages’ of art.
If you cannot make it to the opening, prints may still be purchased at the CRT through July 7th. The staff at the CRT can assist you with your purchases. Just keep in mind that extra popular prints or monotypes may sell out at the opening night sale! So, be sure to mark your calendars for the Creede Arts Council’s art show of the year on display in the Creede Repertory Theatre through July7th.
