The Creede Arts Council’s National Small Print Show is the brainchild of Larry Basky, a former member of the Arts Council. In 2000, when the Council was searching for fundraising ideas, Larry, who is a serigraph printmaker, had been looking for show aimed specifically for printmakers. He was interested in finding shows that would be easy to enter. He envisioned the idea of a National Show featuring small matted prints that could be mailed in to create a display. The idea developed into a format that the Arts Council uses today.
Prospectus information is sent to printmakers specifying original prints, matted in 10”X10” format. Up to 3 prints can be entered with a reasonable entry fee. Prints are judged, and up to 100 are selected for display and sales. The judge also selects 1st, 2nd, 3rd place prints, as well as two honorable mentions, which are given ribbons and cash prizes. The Creede Repertory Theatre collaborates with the Arts Council by providing the display space. The Council receives a commission each sale. The juried prints are on display for a month in Creede and a selection of 30 prints travel to other destinations in Colorado. This very unique show is entering its 17th year.
